Good morning everyone, today I am excited to share my review of the new Orion Pro MAX 5-30x56 HD FFP Rifle Scope (SCFF-75) made by Vector Optics. This scope represents the evolution of the previous series, with updates both aesthetic and structural.
The construction and lens quality have improved compared to the previous series, the Orion Pro MAX 3-18x50 HD SFP Rifle Scope (SCOL-57). As always, Vector improves with each new series, taking into account the feedback from shooters.
I'd like to remind you this review will be straightforward and honest, without any constraints. Thank you to Vector for allowing me to express my thoughts on their products.
General Information
The Orion Pro MAX 5-30x56 HD FFP Rifle Scope (SCFF-75)is primarily designed for Bench Rest and long-range shooting, thanks to a magnification range reaching up to 30x and a side parallax that starts from 10 yards. Compared to the old version, I notice a much more refined and solid design. I like the new system for adjusting the reticle and the beautiful battery compartment cap. I also find the turrets to be much more solid and well-made.
The packaging (which is always well-done and carefully packed with good padding) includes not only the scope but also a sunshade, flip-up lens covers, high-quality 34 mm mounts for Weaver rail (XASR 3453 model), a plastic tool for the scope screws, a metal hex key, a cleaning cloth in its handy pouch, a pin for adjusting the magnification ring, an Orion sticker, and a user manual.
The scope is fitted with a VOR-8 MIL FFP reticle. As shown in the original photos, there are various references for both windage and elevation, which is excellent for those who compensate with the reticle instead of dialing clicks, especially in long-range shooting. Being an FFP scope, at maximum magnification the reticle increases in size but stays fine and discreet, leaving the target visible. There are 6 levels of red illumination, which is very useful in low-light conditions.
Turret Detail
The elevation turret offers considerable travel and includes a useful zero stop. The zeroing procedure involves unscrewing 3 screws located on the turret itself, which is not the fastest process in the field but feels solid once tightened. The clicks are quite distinct and audible.
The turrets feature a division of 1/10 MIL, with each click equating to 0.1 MIL, and each turret rotation includes 100 ultra-fine clicks. The elevation turret has a total travel of approximately 30 MIL, while windage has about 16 MIL per complete turn. This large travel allows for always having the correct elevation for shooting at any distance.
On the elevation turret, the reviewer also found the useful zero stop and a turn indicator, allowing for quick and confident access to zero in any situation. He notes one regret: the absence of a lock on the elevation turret, which is present on the windage turret. The lock is very useful during transport to prevent accidental movements. However, since the zero stop is present, any doubts about the turret moving can be resolved by quickly returning to the initial zero.
The windage turret, also divided into 1/10 MIL, features a quick-locking mechanism: lift to activate, lower to lock. Field zeroing may not be quick, but the system is solid and secure once the screws are tightened properly.
Parallax And Illumination
Lastly, the parallax turret and the illumination control for the reticle. The parallax adjustment ranges from 10 yards to infinity. The turret operates smoothly and accurately, with no snags and reasonable stiffness. The turret size is good, easy to operate with bare hands. What the reviewer particularly liked is that the references on the turret are well spaced, and the blur-out is sharp, precise, and repeatable.
Above the parallax turret is the switch for the reticle illumination, with 6 intensity levels. Compared to other versions, battery insertion is now much easier, thanks to a handy groove on the lid for the provided key. Only the central dot lights up, ensuring that the aiming area is never obscured, even when targeting small-sized targets. In low-light situations, the reviewer finds illuminated reticle vital for outdoor use.
Lenses
The lenses are of LaREE HD type with multi-coating treatment. They reduce glare and reflections, improving light transmission and color contrast. The image appears sharp and bright even in low-light conditions. At maximum magnification (30x), the reviewer reports no aberrations or visual defects, unlike some scopes at the same magnification with inferior lenses. The exit pupil is good, making it easy to find proper alignment with the scope quickly.
Construction
The scope appears quite robust, well-made, and skillfully finished. Compared to previous series, there is a significant leap in quality, especially in the turrets. The body is made from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. The first thing that stands out is the generous 34 mm tube (compared to the 30 mm of previous series), which along with the 56 mm objective allows more internal space, both for letting more light in and for housing more complete mechanisms for managing parallax, elevation, and windage.
The scope is fully waterproof and certified IP56, with no issues for outdoor use in non-extreme conditions. It has shock resistance of 750 G, meaning it can withstand use on small-caliber firearms and air rifles. It is filled with nitrogen (N2) to prevent fogging or internal condensation.
For a 30x FFP scope, the dimensions are remarkably compact: length 348 mm and declared weight 943 g / 37.1 oz (the reviewer’s scale showed 940 g), not super light but significantly less than some direct competitors.
Magnification Ring
Compared to other scopes tried before, especially the previous Orion, the magnification ring is now very smooth, clear, and free from snags. It requires little effort to move, especially when using the provided knurled knob. The reviewer appreciates that no extra levers need to be bought separately to have a complete, ready-to-use scope right out of the box.
