This is a review of Tauron 4-32x56 ED Gen II FFP MRAD Precision Rifle Scope (SCFF-34) from Canadian Operator.
We recently had a look at the Tauron 4-32x56 Gen II from Vector Optics and were quite happy with what it offered for the money. Read on to find out why, and check out our hands-on studio video here:
Great Features for a Great Price
The Tauron Gen II delivers an impressive 8× zoom range (4 to 32×), making it well-suited for long-range precision and competitive PRS across varied distances. Built around a robust 34 mm single-piece tube made of aviation-grade 6061-T6 aluminum, it supports expansive elevation adjustments while maintaining rigidity and long-term durability.
The large 56 mm objective lens ensures exceptional light-gathering capability, providing bright, sharp imagery even during low-light conditions. The glass is ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and LaREE HD, paired with fully multi-coated optics to deliver clarity, edge-to-edge sharpness, and up to 93% light transmission according to Vector Optics.
What is LaREE?
LaREE™ stands for Lanthanide Rare Earth Element. This term refers to a category of advanced optical glass materials that have both a high refractive index and a low Abbe number.
In practical terms:
The high refractive index allows the lens to bend and focus light more effectively, which contributes to a brighter, clearer image.
The low Abbe number helps minimize chromatic aberration—the color fringing or rainbow effect that can occur when different wavelengths of light fail to converge at the same focal point.
When Vector Optics describes a scope as having a LaREE HD lens, they mean it incorporates this special rare-earth-infused glass to deliver high-definition clarity, enhanced color accuracy, and improved contrast. This technology is particularly beneficial at high magnifications and in challenging light conditions, where optical imperfections are more noticeable.
Precision Mechanics
This is a first focal plane (FFP) scope, meaning the reticle scales consistently across the entire magnification range, preserving accurate holdovers and subtensions. The VAT-5 MIL reticle features a “Christmas tree” layout for quick ranging and wind holds. Turrets offer crisp, tactile 0.1 MIL clicks and are equipped with a zero-stop mechanism for fast and reliable return to zero. With 28 MIL of elevation and 16 MIL of windage adjustment, it provides more than enough range for long-distance engagements.
We did run into a small inconsistency here though - the windage turret felt (and sounded) more clicky and tactile than the elevation turret. While this didn't impede our ability to use the optic and stay very accurate with it when testing at our 50m range, it was definitely noticeable. Someone spending a good amount of money on a precision optic will notice these things, and while we're not sure if this is just our product or if similar inconsistencies are found on others, it's definitely something that caught our attention right away.
As far as the controls go - we were very happy with how everything felt. Though we did notice that the diopter adjustment was significantly easier to rotate than the parallax or the zoom ring, nothing moved during our tests and everything felt smooth yet firm.
Comfort & Field of View
Eye relief is a generous 95 mm, ensuring a comfortable and safe shooting position. Field of view at 100 yards spans from 30.8 ft at 4× to 3.85 ft at 32× (or 10.3 m to 1.28 m at 100 m), giving shooters a clear situational picture at any magnification. We found that the "black ring" effect was very minimal here, as the field of view was fantastic. Light transmittance felt very good across the entire zoom range, though there was no way for us to test the 93% claimed on the Vector Optics website.
Build Quality & Environmental Readiness
The Tauron Gen II is IP67 rated, making it waterproof and dust-tight. Nitrogen purging prevents internal fogging, and it’s shockproof up to 1000 G — more than enough to handle heavy-recoil calibers. A diopter adjustment range of +2 to –2 ensures the reticle stays sharp for different eyes. At 360 mm (14.2 in) long and weighing 1007 g (35.5 oz), it’s a substantial optic that still balances well on most rifles. While this is an ideal weight for PRS and long distance shooters, we wouldn't recommend this optic for hunting. Not that it wouldn't perform well - it absolutely would. But, given its weight, there are definitely better options for staying light on your feet - especially if you're trekking around looking for deer all day.
Extras That Matter
Vector Optics ships the Tauron Gen II with rubberized, tethered lens caps, a power throw lever, cleaning cloth, plastic wrench, and a sunshade — all enhancing usability in the field. The scope is covered by a lifetime warranty, offering long-term peace of mind.
One thing that really surprised us as well was the inclusion of a high quality pair of rings. This is often a pitfall of most manufacturers in North America, who don't offer this extremely valuable mounting hardware with the purchase of your optic. This results in you having to spend even more of your hard earned money to even be able to use the thing. The fact that it's included here means you are good to go out of the box.
Lastly, we really would have loved to see the inclusion of branded, hard plastic flip up lens caps. These caps cost manufacturers very little to manufacture, but increase the perceived value of the product by quite a bit. Perhaps it's something for them to consider in the future.
The Verdict
We're overall really impressed with this product. The value proposition is there - and when comparing it to the Venom 5-25x56, you get slightly more adjustment on one of your turrets, a huge increase in zoom capability and the value of having rings included out of the box. As far as performance was concerned - we encountered no issues. We stayed tack sharp and on target at our 50m range playing a game of "Battleship with Guns" - able to hit dime sized targets consistently with ease. We encountered no zero shift and all our controls stayed put despite the recoil from our Tikka precision rifle.
