Review of Frenzy FA 17x20 GMR Green Dot Sight EDC (SCRD-GM68) by Jani Nordman

2026-06-12

This is a review of Frenzy FA 17x20 GMR Green Dot Sight EDC (SCRD-GM68) from Jani Nordman.

I’ll copy some of my review from the red dot review, but how does this differ from the red dot cousin? Not much, all others are identical, just that this version has a green LED and 2 MOA dot, circle dot, and just the circle options for the reticle.

Have you ever shot outside in the rain, in the snow, or run through mud or sand? Any of these making their way to the emitter can ruin your sight picture because if the emitter gets blocked, you don’t have a dot anymore, but a smudge on the window!

This closed dot solves that issue while being straight out of the box, ready to mount to what Vector calls the MAG footprint, but the world knows as the Shield RMS footprint. This is good news as that footprint is very popular. So, you shouldn’t have issues finding a plate or adapter to get this to fit your pistol.

Note that even though Shield RMS and Deltapoint Pro (DPP) look very similar and theoretically you could force this into the mount, you’d not get a proper fit, so I advise against it, as the warranty most likely will not cover if improperly mounted to the wrong footprint. (DPP sockets measure 4.2 mm vs RMS 3.8mm) If you only have a weapon with a DPP footprint, you’ll have to wait for the upcoming (no date released) Vector Optics direct-mount DPP dot!

The glass

The size of the window loses a little bit to its open version , GenII. This is 17x20 mm (0.66 x 0.78 inch) (the open version is 17x21mm, 0.66 x 0.82 inch) but I’ll take the slightly smaller window to get the peace of mind that the dirt and snow are not going to mess with the dot!

The aspheric lens gives excellent clarity, so the bluish, greenish tint is much less than that of non-aspheric lenses and helps reduce any disturbances from the window. This helps with not getting distracted while being target-focused and shooting from target to target.

Housing

Happy to tell you that the trend of using 7075-T6 aluminum on vector green dots is continuing; this is good as the 7075 is nearly twice as strong as the normally used 6061. I feel more secure if I happen to drop the pistol on the green dot, knowing that the chances of catastrophic failure are reduced!

Key features

The battery has its own compartment on the side, this is the only way to go forward, gone are the days where you’d have to remove the green dot to change the battery, meaning you’d need proper tools to remove the thread locked screws, change the battery, clean the screw threads, re-apply thread lock, mount it, wait 12 to 24 hours for the thread locker to fully cure, re-zero the dot. None of this could be done on the fly; now you just open two screws, change the battery and screw it back, and you’re done, literally done in minutes.

What sets this apart from the other new Frenzy-S is that this takes a CR1620 battery. This is understandable but annoying, as now there are three batteries to stock if you run all three new style green dots, the X takes CR2032, the open S takes CR1632, and this takes the CR1620. Not a big deal, but just annoying. Maybe they could have found the 1.2mm of space to get this to 1632, but take this into mind if you order the green/red dot to buy the right battery!

Again, BIG buttons- this is awesome; no more fumbling trying to find the tiny buttons; these are easy to find and give good feedback when pressed. The dot blinks when you reach full brightness, which is the next good thing compared to the Gen I, brighter enough for sunny days, but not completely bright if the sun is directly in front and low on the horizon. Holding the plus button changes the reticles from Dot to Dot with ring to just the ring.

CLICK CLICK, is the sound the adjustment wheels now make. The good thing is they are big and slotted, so you can even use any small flat screwdriver, or in a pinch, you can use a key or any flat small object.

Final words

So far, after around 500 rounds through two samples, I’ve not had any issues so far show up. The green dot is crisp and clear with enough brightness for sunny outdoor days.

This will work great if you’re looking for an EDC optic or you just want a dot that doesn’t get full of grit for your gun, or even sport shooting, but maybe for the latter I’d advise a slightly larger window version, but you do you!

Green dots have been something that people at the range have been asking for a long time now, so I’m happy that they are being offered now! I’ll also review the bigger RMR footprint green dot; that’s the review I’ll link below
